2015 CFDA Awards Red Carpet Beauties: (Clockwise, from top) Kim Kardashian, Julianna Margulies, Chrissy Teigen, Amanda Seyfried
Last night were the 2015 CFDA/Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, held in New York City. Awards were handed out for Womenswear Designer of the Year (Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row), Menswear Designer of the Year (Tom Ford), Accessory Designer of the Year (Tabitha Simmons) as well as the Swarovski Awards for Womenswear (Rosie Assoulin), Menswear (Shayne Oliver for Hood by Air) and Accessory Design (Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel for Mansur Gavriel). As any awards show, there was a red carpet (well, it was white and red), and being that it was a FASHION-related awards show, there was, alas, some risk taking in terms of the looks seen. But there was also some Uh Oh Moments...Let's check out the Highlights and Lowlights:
Kim Kardashian in Proenza-Schouler Fall 2015: Kim K-West wore a see through ankle-length dress from U.S. design team Proenza-Schouler and their Fall 2015 collection. The dress featured varying sized grommets as well as feathers. It was based on a runway look seen on the designers' Fall 2015 show. I actually love this look on Kim Kardashian. The strappy heels are perfect as well. Interesting to note that she decided NOT to insert her thumb through the sleeve thumb hole (see above pic, left).
Julianna Margulies in Michael Kors Fall 2015: Actress Julianna Margulies wore a see-through gunmetal gray sparkle Michael Kors Fall 2015 gown featuring blouson sleeves and center front neckline keyhole. I think this was an (how do I say this politely?) interesting choice. Especially since well, it was VERY SEE-THRU. I think the Kors design/patternmaking/construction team should have lined it. #JustSaying
Michelle Monaghan in Monique Lhuillier Fall 2015: Actress Michelle Monaghan looked GORGEOUS in this gold sequined-and-tulle gown from L.A.-based (and FIDM Graduate) designer Monique Lhuillier. I love this style--very 1920's Art Deco! Her hair was styled right as well as her clean modern makeup. Also, notice how many inches were cut off from the runway sample (5' 11" model) to accommodate Monaghan's 5'7" frame. Here's a hint: about 10 inches.
Diane Kruger in Custom Prabal Gurung: Actress Diane Kruger was one of my favorites at last night's 2015 CFDA Awards Red Carpet. Kruger's strapless Prabal Gurung gown was very Chinoiserie Fab with its black and red color as well as stylings. The heels, clutch and slicked back hair perfectly finish off the entire look.
Janelle Monae in Custom Tadashi Shoji: Miss Monae--always a FASHION DIVA--showed up in an ivory and gold appliqued cape/coat from Tadashi Shoji, "inspired" by the black and silver cape/coat seen on his Fall 2015 runway show. I thought Monae looked fabulous, regal and certainly, very chic.
Chrissy Teigen in Solace London: I LOVED LOVED LOVED this strapless ivory gown on Chrissy Teigen. The dress--from UK Contemporary brand Solace London--featured a cascading over-top and high center front slit. In case you may not know, during the night, the slit split open and tore about FIVE inches higher, reaching to her you-know-what; she said so on Instagram. It's called "Dress was too tight around the hips darlin'!".
Vanessa Hudgens in Sachin and Babi Noir: Husband-and-wife design team Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia dressed actress Vanessa Hudgens in this very pretty hi-lo navy blue dress with ivory lining and sheer black top/shoulder section. Vanessa looked very pretty.
Amanda Seyfried in Rodarte Fall 2015: Actress Amanda Seyfried wore a multicolored sequin/applique cocktail dress from Rodarte Fall 2015 collection. I thought the dress was sassy and fun and right for Seyfried; it's a tad bit "Costume-y" yes, but by styling it with the gold strappy heels, one bracelet and clean center parted hair, it made it more Red Carpet Fab and less Bob Fosse.
Emmy Rossum in Dion Lee Fall 2015: Actress Emmy Rossum wore a black cocktail dress from Australian designer Dion Lee; an interesting design choice for an American Fashion Awards Show. This was, I admit, a tad "Morticia Cocktails" but I still think it was directional enough to grant a nice mention for the 2015 CFDA Awards Red Carpet.
Taraji P. Henson in Vera Wang: Go on Taraji! Give it to Miss Taraji P. Henson to GIVE! At last night's 2015 CFDA Awards, Henson wore a wine red colored gown from Vera Wang. I like the style, shape and color. I just wish it was a bit more fitted at the waist/midriff; let's just say that it looks a bit thick there (remove about 1 1/2" off each side PLEASE!)
Katie Holmes in Custom Ralph Lauren: Emerald green silk charmeuse, bias-cut Custom Ralph Lauren gown--Wake me up when you think this is a Fashion Moment. It's nice, but sooooo boring. We have seen this and been-there/done that. I cannot believe (actually, I can) that the Ralph Lauren design team made this especially for her. This could have been bought off the rack at a Macy's. Yesterday!
Ashley Judd in Badgley Mischka Fall 2015: Oh Ashley. What were you thinking? This is Beauty Pageant Bad 101; the gold, nude, applique, tulle...it's like if someone were costuming a "Miss Spartan Queen". Ashley can do a gown, not just this one. I sure hope she got paid LOTS to be there as well as her First Class Travel and 5-Star Hotel stay.
Jemima Kirke in Rosie Assoulin Fall 2015: Love the color, do not like the scalloped crop top and gown-skirt. I congratulate Asssoulin in winning the 2015 CFDA Awards Swarovski Womenswear award but this style on Jemima was a definite NOT.
Model Fab: (Clockwise, from top) Models Joan Smalls in Calvin Klein Collection; Coco Rocha in Marissa Webb; Petra Nemcova in Max Azria Atelier and Natasha Poly in Michael Kors--Who looked best?
Oh Boy: Tom Ford-- 2015 CFDA Awards
OUCH!! Bestey Johnson doing the splits at the 2015 white/red 2015 CFDA Awards carpet
